Internet-based test (iBT) TOEFL diluncurkan oleh ETS pertama kali pada bulan September 2005 di Canada, Prancis, jerman dan di Itali pada bulan Oktober 2005. Kemudian baru diluncurkan ke seluruh bagian di dunia pada tahun 2006.

What is different about the TOEFL iBT Test?

1. Test ini menilai seluruh 4 (empat) kemampuan (skills) bahasa yang sangat penting diperlukan dalam komunikasi yang efektif, yaitu speaking, listening, reading dan writing.

2. Test ini dilakukan via internet di berbagai Test Center Resmi di seluruh dunia.

3. Beberapa soal test menuntut peserta test untuk dapat mengkombinasikan lebih dari 1 kemampuan (skill), seperti:

  • read, listen, then speak (membaca, mendengar dan berbicara) in response to a question.
  • listen, then speak (mendengar, lalu berbicara) in response to a question.
  • read, listen then write (membaca, mendengar lalu menulis) in response to a question.

4. Jangka waktu test adalah sekitar 4 jam lamanya.

5. Mencatat diperbolehkan untuk dilakukan peserta test ketika test berlangsung.

6. Score akan dilaporkan secara online, dengan demikian, peserta test dapat mengetahui scorenya secara online selama 15 hari kerja setelah test.

A. DESCRIPTION OF THE TOEFL iBT READING SECTION

Reading Passages: TOEFL iBT test memasukan 3 kategori dasar dari teks akademis. Kategori ini berdasarkan objektivitas penulis:

  • Exposition: Materi yang menyediakan sebuah penjelasan atas sebuah topik.
  • Argumentation: Materi yang mempresentasikan sebuah sudut pandang tentang sebuah topic dan menyediakan bukti untuk mendukungnya.
  • Historical biographical/event narrative: Sebuah perhitungan atas kejadian lampau atau kehidupan seseorang, dinarasikan atau ditulis oleh orang lain.

Reading Question Formats

  • Soal dengan 4 (empat) pilihan dan 1 (satu) jawaban tunggal di dalam format pilihan ganda.
  • Soal dengan 4 (empat) pilihan dan 1 (satu) jawaban tunggal yang meminta peserta test untuk “memasukkan sebuah kalimat” pada tempat yang tepat dalam sebuah paragraph.
  • Soal terbaru “Membaca untuk belajar” dengan lebih dari 4 (empat) pilihan dan lebih dari 1 (satu) jawaban.

B. DESCRIPTION OF THE TOEFL iBT LISTENING SECTION

Listening Question Formats

Setelah materi Listening diputar, peserta test melihat dan mendengar setiap soal sebelum mereka melihat pilihan jawaban yang diberikan.

Ada 4 (empat) format soal di dalamnya:

  • Soal Pilihan Ganda dengan 4 pilihan dan 1 jawaban tunggal .
  • Soal Pilihan Ganda dengan lebih dari 1 jawaban.
  • Soal yang menuntut peserta test untuk mengatur/menyusun kejadian atau tahapan dalam sebuah proses.
  • Soal yang menuntut peserta test untuk mencocokan benda-benda atau kata pada kategori-kategori dalam sebuah bagan atau tabel.

C. DESCRIPTION OF THE TOEFL iBT SPEAKING SECTION

Di dalam sessi Speaking terdapat 6 soal test yang berdurasi sekitar 20 menit.

  • Dua (2) soal pertama adalah Independent Speaking Tasks (Soal Speaking Mandiri) yang memfokuskan pada topic-topic soal yang biasa dikenali oleh peserta test.
  • Empat (4) soal selanjutnya adalah Integrated Tasks (Soal Paduan) yang menuntut peserta test untuk mengkombinasikan lebih dari 1 kemampuan (skill) ketika menjawab.

Peserta test harus mengenakan headsets dengan microphone untuk keseluruhan sessi Speaking test. Jawaban peserta akan terekam secara digital dan dikirim ke jaringan online ETS.

Respond time: 60 seconds

4. Academic Course Topic:

General/Spesific

·A reading passage (75-100) broadly defines a term, process, or idea from an academic subject.

·An excerpt from a lecture (60-90 seconds; 150-220 words) provides examples and specific information to illustrate the term, process, or idea from the reading passage.

·The question asks the test taker to combine and convey important information from the reading passage and lecture.

5. Campus Situation Topic:

Problem/Solution

·The listening passage (60-90 seconds; 180-220 words) is a conversation about a student-related problem and two possible solutions.

·The question asks the test taker to demonstrate understanding of the problem and to express an opinion about solving the problem.

Preparation time: 20 seconds

Respond time: 60 seconds

6. Academic Course Topic:

Summary

·The listening passage is an excerpt from a lecture (90-120 seconds; 230-280 words) that explains a term or concept and gives concrete examples to illustrate it.

·The question asks the test taker to summarize the lecture and demonstrate an understanding of how the examples relate to the overall topic.

Preparation time: 20 seconds

Respond time: 60 seconds

D. DESCRIPTION OF THE TOEFL iBT WRITING SECTION

Total durasi waktu Writing Test Section adalah 50 menit. Peserta test menulis respon mereka pada 2 (dua) soal test Writing. Respon diketik pada layar computer dan dikirimkan ke jaringan online ETS.

Integrated Writing Task

Read/Listen/Write

·Test takers read a short text of about 230-300 words (3 minutes reading time) on an academic topic.

·Test takers may take notes on the reading passage.

·The reading passage then goes away during the lecture that follows; it reappears when it is time for the test takers to begin writing so they can refer to it as they are working.

·Test takers listen to a speaker discussing the same topic from a different perspective. The listening passage is about 230-300 words long (or about 2 minutes listening time).

·The listening passage provides additional information that relates to points made in the reading passage; test takers may take notes on the listening passage.

·Test takers are asked to write a summary in connected English prose of important points made in the listening passage and explain how these relate to the points made in the reading passage. Suggested response length is 150-225 words; however, there is no penalty for writing more, as long as it is in response to the task presented.

Task 2:

Independent Writing

·Test takers are asked to write an essay that states, explains, and supports their opinion on an issue. An effective essay will usually contain a minimum of 300 words; however. Test takers may write more if they wish.

·Test takers need to develop support for their opinions or choices, rather than simply listing personal preferences or choices.

·Typical essay questions begin with statements such as:

oDo you agree or disagree with the following statement? Use reasons and specific details to support your answer.

oSome people believe x. Other people believe Y. Which of these two positions do you prefer/agree with? Give reasons and specific details.

Catatan: contoh soal/sample questions tidak bisa dijadikan sebagai acuan akan soal TOEFL yang akan dihadapi peserta. Peserta tidak akan memperoleh soal test yang sama setiap kali melakukan test.

  1. Saya ingin mengetahui bobot penilaian untuk tiap tiap poin tes toefl, misalnya apakah jika saya buruk di poin speaking saya masih bisa mengejar nilai dari poin lain atau keseluruhan nilai menjadi buruk? terima kasih

    • Seluruh poin akan dijadikan satu. Kalau buruk di speaking, harus mengejar nilainya di skill yang lain.
